Privacy Policy

This policy describes the information collected when someone visits Jackson County Criminal History, the reasons it is used, and the limited cases in which another party may receive it. By using the website, you accept these practices.

Data You Give Us Directly

Search Queries

A name or location entered in a search tool is sent directly to the outside provider that operates it. That provider processes the request and supplies any result. Jackson County Criminal History does not keep or log those search terms on its own systems.

Messages and Contact Submissions

An email sent to us may be retained long enough to answer and maintain the related correspondence. We keep it within our organization unless disclosure is required by law.

Data We Gather Automatically

When a page loads, the servers may collect basic technical information about the visit:

  • Your device type and operating system
  • The IP address assigned to your device
  • The pages you visited and how long you stayed on each
  • Your browser type and version
  • Timestamps for each page view
  • The referring site, when one is available

Cookies and Analytics

Cookies are small files saved on a device. We use them with analytics services to understand traffic patterns, such as which pages draw visits and where sessions end. Browser controls can block cookies, although some website functions may then behave differently.

What We Do With This Data

  • Tracking down and fixing technical issues
  • Operating the site and maintaining page performance
  • Routing a search request to the selected partner
  • Showing ads that may line up with your interests
  • Learning which pages are useful and which may need improvement

No Criminal-Record Data on File

Jackson County Criminal History does not maintain, compile, or sell a database of personal criminal records. It publishes general directions to records held by Jackson County Sheriff Records, the Iowa District Court, Iowa DCI, and the Iowa Sex Offender Registry. The site is not a consumer reporting agency under the Fair Credit Reporting Act, and visitor information is not assembled into a consumer report or third-party criminal file.

Third-Party Search Partners

Outside companies operate the search boxes. Information entered there is governed by the provider's privacy policy rather than this policy. Each provider controls its own retention and disclosure practices, so review those terms before submitting a query.

Links to Other Websites

Links may lead to Jackson County offices, Iowa court portals, state agencies, legal resources, and outside search tools. Once you follow a link, the destination's privacy policy controls the visit. Read it before providing personal information.

Advertising providers may use their own systems to measure activity across websites and select ads. We do not operate that tracking.

Who Might See Your Data

We do not sell personal information. Limited data may be available to:

  • Ad networks that place ads on our pages
  • Search partners that process a query you submit
  • Analytics providers that measure traffic and performance
  • Government or law-enforcement bodies acting under a valid legal demand

How We Protect Your Data

Reasonable security practices help protect the information we collect. No internet system is completely secure, however, and we cannot guarantee that a breach will never occur.

Users Under 18

This website is intended for adults and does not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 18. If we learn that a minor supplied such data, we will delete it.

Your Data Rights

Rights can vary by residence and applicable law. Iowa Code chapter 692 governs dissemination of state criminal-history information, while the Iowa Open Records Law, chapter 22, governs access to records held by Iowa government bodies. Those laws do not turn this private reference site into a government record custodian. Subject to applicable law, you may:

  • Request that we erase your data
  • Ask for a copy of personal information we hold about you
  • Opt out of certain kinds of data processing
  • Ask us to correct inaccurate personal information

Updates to This Policy

We may revise this policy as practices or legal duties change. A revised version will appear here with a new effective date.

Effective date: July 23, 2026
